Gramolazzo

The village, which gives its name to the artificial lake, is located along the left bank of the "Serchio di Minucciano" stream which descends from the Serenaia Valley at 625 masl. Its toponym probably derives from "gramola", an ancient tool for processing of hemp. It is mentioned in numerous medieval documents as a castle and, still today, ruins of an ancient fort are visible on a nearby hill.

Currently Gramolazzo is formed by two nuclei: the High or Old Town, which constitutes the historical center and inside which there are very ancient and beautifully made boulder houses, and the Low or New Town, which represents, instead, the most modern developed towards the plain thanks above all to the marble working started from 1900 and where the Carabinieri Station, the Post Office and numerous commercial and entrepreneurial activities are located.
